SUNY-ESF NSRC representatives René Germain and Mary Beth Malmsheimer hosted a table at the New York State SAF meeting in January, joined by NSRC PIs Dr. Eddie Bevilacqua (Investigating the Decoupling of Overstory and Understory Trees) and Dr. Danielle Kloster (Private forest landowner engagement in forest management programs for carbon sequestration) and their grad students.

Effects of Timber Harvesting on the Wetland Ecology of Northeastern Lowland Forests
NSRC researchers quantify ecological impacts in lowlands and develop standardized measurement methods for assessing wetland habitats to help guide planners and forest managers. Researchers will develop a better understanding of intermittent wetland habitats and ecological processes associated with northern white cedar forests. Read More
Monitoring Moose and Other Wildlife on Penobscot Indian Nation Lands
Moose and other wildlife are culturally important and a source of food for the Penobscot Indian Nation (PIN). However, recent declines in regional populations due to winter ticks have caused concern among the Tribe. NSRC researchers developed a multi-species monitoring program using remote cameras to track populations trends of moose and other wildlife species found on PIN lands. Read More
Tools for rehabilitative silviculture to enrich habitat and restore productivity in degraded hardwood stands.
Across the Northern Forest, critical early-seral habitat is in decline, while millions of acres of hardwood stands languish in a degraded condition. Creative researchers and practitioners throughout the region have developed effective rehabilitative silviculture strategies for such stands. Read More
A New Silvicultural Guide for Northern Conifers in the Northeastern U.S.
Just like the forests themselves, silvicultural recommendations have changed over time with the advancement of science and emergence of concerns and values, such as biodiversity and climate change, that were unknown to our predecessors. Yet, the silvicultural guide for the northern conifer forest type covering 6 million acres of New England is close to 50 years old with little relevance to the conditions and challenges facing forest managers today.
