Just How Hard Is It Raining?

Abstract: With a warming climate, precipitation intensity has been increasing. These intense events tend to cause greater stream sediment movement and release of flow-governed solutes such as nitrate, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and associated trace metals including toxins such as mercury (Hg). These greater sediment and toxin loads can compromise forest stream health. Cold-water fish, already stressed by warming water temperatures, will be challenged to find refugia. Moreover, stream nutrient export from these large events limits forest productivity. They also pose a risk to downstream communities not only from flooding but by interfering with water treatment plants providing drinking water supply. Thus, extreme flow events brought on by high precipitation intensity counter the value and reliability of the ecosystem services the Northern Forest is prized for. This project will convert the daily precipitation record from the montane headwaters at Sleepers River, Vermont, to a high-resolution 15-minute time series. We will collaborate with Forest Service at Hubbard Brook, where they recently compiled a similar high-resolution dataset, to assess how regional precipitation and intensity is changing.
