2018 Update - NSRC Survey, Webinar, and Business Report
No funding is available for the annual RFP this year. NSRC and the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station are working together to determine the future of NSRC and will provide information as it becomes available. NSRC directors and managers are reviewing our past successes, identifying gaps in services, and envisioning a future for the NSRC.
Since its inception in 2001, NSRC has awarded more than $23 million in research across the Northern Forest. In 2016, across all four Themes, NSRC reviewed 37 full proposals with requests for more than $3.2 million. Awards were selected collectively by the Theme Directors and the USDA Forest Service Program Manager based on their assessments of the highest needs for the Northern Forest and NSRC and the recommendations of the peer review panel from each Theme. Funding decisions were difficult because of the large number of quality proposals submitted, coupled with limited funding dollars. NSRC awarded approximately $600,000 to 8 projects across the Northern Forest that included three new Principal Investigators and roughly a 50% funding match.
An NSRC Request for Proposals (RFP) is announced in late summer each year, with pre-proposals due in October. Investigators are asked to submit pre-proposals to the appropriate Research Theme and Theme Manager. Approved pre-proposals advance to the next competitive round of full proposals due in January.
2016 RFP - Now closed
Pre-proposal and full proposal submissions are reviewed through an anonymous peer-review process within each Theme. Each Theme determines which pre-proposals advance to the full proposal round based on the review panel recommendations and the greatest research needs for that particular Theme. Final awards are selected collectively by the Theme Directors and the Program Managers, working closely with the USDA Forest Service Manager, based on their assessments for the highest needs for the NSRC and on review panel recommendations.
Pre-proposals may be submitted for projects with budget requests ranging from small seed grants to a maximum total award of $150,000. The average grant awarded across all Themes has been $73,000 over the past eight years.
Principal Investigators who are delinquent with terms of current or previous NSRC awards, such as reports, are not eligible to apply for NSRC funds until award terms have been met.
